You don't really need to cover anything. I never do. Never had problems. You won't hurt the battery, the alternator will be fine as long as you don't blast straight into it, and I usually hit the plug wires, distributor cap, coil and relay center with WD-40 before spraying, that repels water long enough to keep it outta there.

Not sure about the engine dressing, never used it. Have shot the hoses and wiring w/Armourall, but it makes the rubber brown and brittle after exposure to heat for long periods of time. I just leave it natural now.

If you are really paranoid, spray a little WD-40 inside the distributor cap also, water will not get in there.
