I don't know about your Wrangler specifically, but on cars that I've done, the only taking apart you've got to do is to remove the plastic shroud around the steering column. Then you should be able to get to the unit. There will likely be a screw or release mechanism, you should be able to get out the remnants of the old unit pretty easily.
