I got the exact same code on my 99 Mountaineer and it turned out to be the DPFE sensor. I purchased one at Auto Zone for about $55. It seems Ford has trouble with their Idle Air Control valves and DPFE sensors because we replaced the exact same sensors on our 95 Taurus. I'm not sure where the DPFE sensor is located on the 4.0L V6 but I'm pretty sure it's made of black plastic with two hoses connected to it. The DPFE sensor on my 5.0L V8 is located on the back side of the engine next to the firewall. It is made of aluminum (or some other metal) and is silver in color with two hoses connected to it. This sensor monitors EGR flow and can become clogged with carbon deposits (as was the case with mine). Hope this helps.
