If the oil blow-by was internal, you'd smoke like hell if the plug's firing ends were wet with oil. Like Mpumas said, they were probably sitting in a puddle from the cover seals, and it coated them when you pulled 'em out. It's gonna smoke when you start it once you put them back in (from that oil going into the cylinders), so don't trip on that too.
