My 2000 has rear disks, so I would think his 2001 would have them also.
I have not experience any 'moaning' with my 2000, however as you mention, it may be dirt, oil, of brake fluid contaminating the pads.
On the other hand, Lesabrefan, you might just have to live with it, or it may go away. I would take the wheels off and have a look.
