It really depends on what kind of bike you're using. In general, I don't like using the clutch to wheelie. A big torque bike like my ZRX can wheelie on throttle alone in the first two gears. I just roll it up to about 5k in second, roll off for a second and hit it. On my buddy's CBR600, I do the same thing at 8k in second gear, no clutch. It's all about practice and throttle control. I've had one go egg shaped on me and it's no fun. Best thing to do is practice on a dirt bike if you have access to one, but eventually you gotta try it on the street bike. Be careful and start small, don't get greedy like I did. LOL

BTW, I don't do mile long wheelies. I bring it up, maybe shift a gear or two if it feels good, then set it down. Never on the highway. Oh, and there's a couple good write ups on the web about it too. Just try a search on how to wheelie.
