You're right in that the paint is etched, without seeing it and feeling it myself I can't recommend a remedy but any remedy will not restore it 100% short of a re-paint.
Do you have a polisher?
If so you may need to use a mild abrasive to polish out the hazing. Seek out a professional detailer and see what they recommend.
