Gasoline eats thru rubber and plastic like "NO TOMMOROW" as well.
I suspect it has more to do with the type and grade of plastic that the parts are made out of. While I can't say there would be no problem, let me play devils advocate.
Acetone comes in 'plastic' bottles, and is therefore able to be stored for long periods (Years) in plastic bottles at 100% concentration.
Acetone in gasoline is at the 0.001% concentration. That's like only 70 ml per 45 Liter fillup. I'm afraid I just don't see it being a huge issue with the plastic or rubber parts in the engine.
When we look at ethonol enriched gasoline, they use about 20 % ethonol, and that stuff 'does' ruin engines at that concentration. So what they do is mix a pile of other chemicals into the fuel to reduce the action of the ethonol on plastic and rubber.
20% ethonol concentation vs 0.001% acetone concentration. The amount of acetone is 1/12,000th the concentration of ethonol which is commonly used in engines.
With acetone being stored for years in plastic, and looking at the fuel concentrations involved I don't see a problem.
Nect factor in the people that have been doing this for 'YEARS' with their engines with ZERO issues. I'm afraid I just don't see it being a problem.
That is my opinion, others are free to disagree with me.
If I actually saw an improvement in gas mileage of 30%!! YES, YOU BETTCHA I'D DO IT! - IN LESS THEN 10 SECONDS!
Slight problem is:
I tried it in my engine,
I haven't seen any improvement what so ever, and certainly not at the 30% level. In fact it looked like my gas mileage went down.
Hence I stopped doing acetone. After i'm finished getting my new plug wires, cap-and-rotor in place, I plan on trying it again to see if there is an improvement.
