From a stand point of stock horsepower the 350 would win hands down. My dad has an 87 silverado with the 305 and it is a super reliable engine. he has driven it for two years and only chnaged the oil and put gas in it. They may not be the fastest but they are a good engine none the less. I can't really think of any problems with them that would make them undesirable. They actually have more power than you would think they would. Drive it a little before you do anything. It may suit your needs as is. Good Luck
