Yup, a record

I suppose it depends on what category you want to quantify "has the record" in. It's an unofficial record, in any case.

The Sledgehammer was a highly-modified yet still street-legal 1989? Corvette. It was not a "trailer queen" but was actually driven from Callaway's Connecticut facility to the Transportation Research Center test track in Ohio. Once there, shaved tires were installed, the tank was drained and filled with racing gasoline (no performance boost, but allowed the engine to be driven to the limit with less fear of self-destruction), and other minor tuning was performed as needed. After a lengthy session of test and tune (including putting duct tape over some of the openings in the custom bodywork!), the car registered a pass down the straight of the TRC's huge oval of just over 254 mph. This is considered to be the unofficial record for "highest top speed of a street-legal automobile). It still stands.
