Luckily, I have had no problems with my 97 CL.
Since check engine light is on, you must scan the OBDII for trouble codes. This should give you a very accurate idea of what's going on. Don't just start replacing parts for this will get very expensive and won't solve problem.
I am surprised the codes don't pin point the problem!
