depends on how you drive it. Higher RPMs, low quality oil, late oil changes, etc will shorten it's life. My grandpa's got a Silverado with a 305. The timing chain in that lasted close to 200,000 miles. I have 158,000 miles on my Silverado 350 and the timing is starting to get a little bit sloppy (still runs great). I'll be putting aftermarket gears in it. They are fairly popular for the 350s, and should be the exact same size as the 262. I'd recommend getting a set of gears. They're a bit louder, but last almost forever.
