99's are tough years b/c VW made a complete model change from the MK3>MK4. The 99 mk3's have just the 1999 as a model year the MK4's have 1999.5 as a model year. I’m pretty sure that a 99.5 MK4 GTI will have a 1.8T. It will only have 150 hp instead of the current GTI's which have 180 hp. Same engine but different outputs I believe the output change occurred in 01 or 02.
***note***: MK4's are the current body style.
