That's asking a lot. Leaks, smells are hard enough to diagnose even when the car is right in front of you.
I've never heard of an engine catching fire because of a oil leak, BUT, if its getting hot enough to cause an odor, I would get it checked out ASAP. Since you're on a road trip, its probably even more urgent since oil leaks may only get worse and running out of oil on the road is never a plus.
It could also be a brake caliper hanging up, dragging and over heating. Check out every wheel for odors and excessive heat after driving.
