If I shut off the engine for a few seconds and start it again it will move again for about a mile and then stop again. My regular mechanic did a trans service on it, after which I was able to take it about 60 miles before the same problem started. Any ideas short of a complete overhaul are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have an answer but I'm having a similar problem with a family members car that is just now sitting. Its a '91 Legacy 2WD, after it gets warm the transmission seems to slip! I hear a whirling sound in there near where the torque convereter is but I'm not sure if that's the problem. If you find anymore out let me know, I'll do the same.
