Sorry Derek for the late reply.

I know soft pastels are like chalk and oils are kind of waxy.
I have never used oils, but I like softpastels.

I hope you ask over there at wetcanvas. I know there are lots of good artists but it gets boring real fast if you are only into cars. They like rendering flowers, puppies, children, and structures; who wants to draw that stuff.

I currently use el-cheapo brand soft pastels but I hear that Prisma makes skinny pastels that are awesome. I saw an artist at the mall and spoke with him. He used Prisma skinny/small pastels and pastel pencils (all soft). I need to get some Prisma.

If you need some books on pastels check out your local library. They will have some.
