My 1997 did the same thing, and I did the same things you did to try and find out what was causing it. It stopped working a short time later, and I being frustrated about it, eventually gave up on it, so now we have been opening and closing the door manually. I'd be interested in finding out how someone fixed the problem. The dealer wasn't much help because they couldn't re-create the problem. Ours did it sporadically and was unpredictable. Their response was, "Next time it happens bring it on down and we'll look at it." Well of course the next two times it did do that, we went to the dealer and the door worked fine for them. Go figure.
