I don't think the check engine light makes the ECU put the car in "slow mode", but if the light is on you're definitely not running at full power. If everything was hunky-dory your check engine light wouldn't be on. Unfortunately, the check engine light can be caused by a lot of different stuff. Just take your car to the local Infiniti dealer and have them check the error code being given by the computer. It'll only cost you a little bit of money and you'll know *exactly* why the check engine light is on.

If anyone is taking odds, i'm betting on a bad O2 sensor...
