My friend figured then it was a problem with either the EGR valve or the back pressure transducer. Last night, tried a replacement transducer and it started up at first. After letting it idle for about 30 seconds, I gave it a little gas and it died out again.
I also have noticed black water-type gunk coming out the tailpipe, especially when revving the engine. Although we will be replacing the EGR valve tonight to see if that is the problem, I have some doubts as to whether that will make much of a difference. If a new EGR valve does not work, could the problem be exhaust-related anyway?
Any help is much appreciated. I am stumped.

Sounds like your exhaust system may be plugged up.
