usually the TFI module plug faces the front of the engine.

to determine the correct position, remove the number one spark plug (front, passenger side). place your finger in the plug hole and have a friend crank the motor manually until you feel air being compressed. when the compression stops, stop moving the motor. then, index the rotor so that when the dist is dropped in, it points toward the post for the #1 spark plug wire. secure the dist with the clamp and attempt to start the motor. if it backfires, retard the timing significantly (rotate the dist clockwise for retard, counterclockwise for advance). if all else fails, fool around with the timing till it starts. remove the spout connector (near the dist plug, 2 small yellow wires) and set the timing to 10 degrees before top dead center. tighten the hold down bracket bolt and plug the spout connector back in. should run fine.

why did you remove the dist to begin with?
