Replacing the ball joints are a HUGE pain in the ass, especially if they have never been done before. Getting them out is not tough, but getting the new ones in is no fun at all. But, if it needs to be doe, it needs to be done. Just letting you know. I changed my coild springs recently, and its not that hard and it made a big difference in the noise level. In these old cars, shocks are good to change every 20ish K miles. Replacing all the frame bushings and such is also a very good way to stop noise as it lifts the body off the frame... your on the right track, but yes, the ball joints are a bitch.
