We aren't exactly sure where the leak is. We are guessing it caused the resistor to go out since there was evidence water was getting into the fan motor via the black hose attached to the base of the motor. It was rusty inside and some water came out of the hose when we replaced the fan. Until I came to this website, I had no idea there was even a cabin air filter, but it seems to be in the right place from where we have a leak, and others in this forum have suggested it seems to be a problem. I have no idea how often it needs to be replaced, but I bet mine never was. I have a 99 GX, bought in 2003, had 57K on it. It had been in a front end accident, but damage was noted as minor on reports, and until we noticed the leak on the passenger, believed the car was still in good front end shape. Only a new headlight and rim, all other items still have factory type labeling. However, seeing as many others seem to have a leak in the same area, and I am now hearing how GMs are prone to various leaks, I needed to find out, as cheap as possible, how the stop the leak before I have to put another fan in my car.
Just wish I would have known more about all the electrical quirks prone to this model car, but oh well. It's been very reliable mechanically, just does some weird things every now and then electrically.
