Do not use full water pressure on the heater core, there is a good chance of causing it to leak. I would try one of the common engine flush products first. If the car has automatic temperature control you probably don't have a heater shuoff valve. Are you 100% sure that problem isn't in the control system? If both heater hoses are hot with the engine warmed up you might have a stuck air door.
