It's unlikely that a BOO switch could cause a cruise concern if it's working correctly (if your brake lights are coming on, it's good). On the Tauraus, those buttons were bad about going out. You used to have to replace the steering wheel to get the buttons but now you can get them from the dealer seperate and they just pry out with a small screwdriver. Check your deactivator switch on your master cylinder. It's common for those to leak brake fluid through them, causing a short.
