The float may be stuck or the wires from the sending unit in the tank could have become disconnected. If it's the sending unit they may have to drop the tank to get to it. I have a Ford Ranger and the gas gauge in it has become squirely so I reset the trip odometer at every fill up and I know what my mileage is so I know when I'm getting low.
