MOST of the time guys who switch to auto are guys who are afraid to learn to drive a stick. Easier to launch and somewhat quicker shifts...
Get an aftermarket shifter and learn to powershift, you can shift faster than a stock AOD...
However, an auto car is more consistent at the track so running in a class with a dial-in you can win with an auto unless your up against a real hotshoe...
