The "mechanical" is actually called a clutch type lsd. it uses clutch plates sanswitched together and locks up pretty good in a strait line. they dint grip very well at low speeds so cone gears are usually use to provide a pre-load and if it sips under power it has cams to push the plates harder.

the Viscous has plates also but with no fiction material. each plate connected to the right wheel is sandwitched between two plateds coneected to the left and vice-versa. the plates have notches cut through them to allow the viscous fluid to flow through. the whole stack us dunked in a pot of goo. the goo creates the lockup between the two wheels. the more slip the more the heat and the more the goo expands witch makes more lockup.

clutch types wear out over time but dont ship power unexpectedly from one wheel to the other

but too much heat will turn the goo in a viscous into water. ive brought many a viscous type to their knees on the track
