The dealer wants to make some money off of you by resetting this light. There's a special tool that does this, and you can buy it for $100 on ebay.
There's another fellow on ebay who'll send you a piece of wire and clip, along with some instructions, telling you how to do it yourself, for about $15. Look for "BMW Reset Tool".
My car is a 1985 535i. You open the hood and the plug is sticking up out of the engine bay. It's got about 20 pins in it. If you dig around the internet, you can find some instructions which will tell you how to do it all yourself...although the instructions never worked for mine. Mine have been flashing for 20,000 miles now!
Good luck, whatever you decide.
