It sounds like you have a problem with the solenoids that cause the transmission to shift not the entire transmission. Also you may want to change the vacuum modulator as it will cause a similar problem. It is cheap and easy to change.

Do you happen to know where the vacuum modulator is located on my car (2000 Grand Am GT)? Would like to change this first since you said its inexpensive and easy to change. What about the solenoids where are they located and how hard are they to change? would appreciate all the help.
