This more applies to those using tires with a sidewall of more than about 50 series and especially the 13 and 14 inch tires.
I learned today from my friendly nieghborhood used tire place that locking up your front tires during hard braking and causing a slight bald spot is more damaging than you might think. The skidding tire will be forced apart and the belts inside have high possibility of breaking. Anywhere from the bald spot itself to almost the other side of friggin tire can be damaged.
What will then happen is that over time (took me less than 2 months) the tire will slowly expand at the point where the belt broke and slowly make a bubble in the tread. At which point you either change it or enjoy the bouncing it'll give your ride before it explodes violently causing you to lose control and cause mass property damage.
Just thought I'd let you all know that
