I have a problem parking beside a curb on the street

When I'm in the car, it feels as though I'm close to the curb, so I park it thinking I'm close enough. But then when I get out of the car, I have a couple inchs of space from the curb and the car and the car is literally almost in the middle of the road
.
I guess I'm not use to it ... since I've been driving a 93 Maxima for a long time.
