Well, I assume you're talking about a Honda since this is the Honda forum. Honda uses mechanical lifters in their engines. What causes the noise is the distance between the cam and the follower is too great. This is known as lash. A valve adjustment is needed, until then your engine won't run as good as it can and make noise. I've driven cars with the same problem and never had any damage as a result.
