On race days (all cars welcome, not just street), there are almost zero imports. The racing classes are totally dominated by V8 cars. Some are later models than others, but it's true, the muscle car era stuff rules.
We see the occasional fast (truly fast, not just against others of the same) FWD ricers. Just as in the movies, the youngsters point at them and say: "See! I TOLD you the Hondas run!" What these inexperienced youngsters don't realize, is the expense of building a Honda engine that makes over 400 horsepower, and maintaining it. One can spend upwards of $7,000 US to get that kind of power, and it may last a couple of outings before a refresh. For the same "investment", one can have a 600 horspower big block Chevy that will live 5 years under racing conditions.
In short, don't let the views of a college kid give you a misunderstanding of the car culture in the USA. Only the "kids" are into Jap crap.
here in vegas you see a ricer on everycorner but if you go to the las vegas drag strip its nothing but muscle that go far (with the occasional import) most kids would rather have a muscle car but dont have the patience to save their money and look for a couple of months for a muscle car. at my high school (a tech school) all the kids drive ricers but me and we have the occasional street light contest and i have yet to lose but i still dont get shit for respect from them and it pisses me off
