If you don't have an airbrush to shoot the acrylic clear (X-22, I believe) then you can also use a product called Future Floor Wax. It is very thin, so you can apply it by brush and it self-levels very well. Doing a few coats normally gets things looking pretty good. Future is an acrylic, so it can be applied over basically anything.

However, even though it self-levels very well, I would still try to avoid doing it on very large areas, such as a car body. It is best for small items that need a clear coat.
