I'm taking a shot in the dark here...
I've kindof been wondering lately where the DIC computer gets and stores its information. ie does it have its own computer or is it an intragral part of the main ECM or is it its own computer which gets and stores its information in the ECM. Anyways the fact that the DIC is saying something about not being able to get data would suggest to me that it is having some sort of communication failure with the ECM which might mean that the ECM is damaged or maybe that it has not power, ie blown fuse.
In the old days the starter was pretty much directly connected to the ignition so even if the computer went or something the car would still turn over, but with our car it may be different especially considering how the securoty system is integrated with the starter.
Just a guess. When you turn the key forward is the service engine soon light on. It should be and this is normal for any car which has he key forward but is not running. If your light is out it might also suggest a problem with the computer.
Good luck
