Engine bearings? Which ones? Sounds like it may be engine mounts, my car did the same(manual though) when the engine was under load it was fine, lift the right foot and a clunk or series of clunks followed! I though drivetrain but was engine mounts. They are easy to check, can do visually, make sure they are not squashed looking! Front left( looking towards car, under bonnet), botom-middle of engine to chasis rail and one near tranny I think....from memory
