Thier cheaper.
often A LOT CHEAPER!
Jap imports here can sell for half as much as an equvilant NZ model.
However there is a reason why they are cheaper, the JAP spec models of many German cars from BMW to Merc to VW are usualy made with lesser engine specs (smaller engines, or de-tuned enignes) as well as things like cloth instead of leather interiors. While they may carry the same badges as models sold in other markets, the cars are usualy quite heavily tailored to the Japanese market. In exteme cases some models even have quite differnt suspensions fitted.
But most importantly they are also often built with differnt bumbers and differnt window glass, which usualy do not meet all international specs.
They are also often assembled in Asian plants, and there have been quality issues with used imports sold here.
This of course may or may not effect bringing a car into the US, but be warned that you may encounter the same problems you do with the Skyline.
If the relevant US authorities are un-aware of the differnces then you may get one legalised easily as long as an equivilant model is sold in the US.
However, if they are aware of the differnces then they may either refuse the car, or require changing things like bumbers, doors and window glass etc, all of which could get very expensive.
