I had an 87 Mercury Linx station wagon with an automatic, and before I drove it to the junkyard I decided to experiment with it. I would drive 25-30, put it in reverse, the car would slow down and start going in reverse. I would rev it up to 4000 rpms, and put it to drive, it would squeel, but even after 30 minutes of constant abuse like this, the transmission still sounded fine, no grinds. Just don't do it too much.
