You will have to get under the front end of the car to get it out. It has to be taken out as a unit, not separated. There are three bolts on it (if I remember correctly) one on the pass. side (back) and two by the tranny. There shouldn't be a guard on it, that is just the tranny casing. the starter will slide right out when you have it unbolted.
