It's actually fairly easy, it just takes a hell of alot of steps. You will probably need a Helm's manual for it if you are new at it, proper tools, and a good jack. You'd be looking at a full weekend's worth under the car if you have to dink around with it. Replace or surface the flywheel while you're at it.
You can either take out the engine and go at the tranny from there (the longer, less painful way), or you can go at it underneath the car where the actual tranny is. I've tried it, it hurts, and you'll acquire many battle scars on your first try
I would just take it to a shop if you've only got a Chilton's.
