Actually, Huffa, I paid $5 for it (and that's $5 Canadian). The former owners were ready to have it towed to a scrapyard because their dealership told them it would cost at least $5000 to make it roadworthy again. My dad and I, doing most of the labour, spent about $2000 all told on it, which was still a pretty sweet deal, considering the car.
A lot of dealership mechanics hate working on older cars, particularly here up north where the road salt causes horrendous amounts of rust. Lots of hammer and torch work to free up bolts.
