The knocking sound you hear is probably timing chain slap. The factory cam gear is made of nylon (to reduce engine noise) and wear out causing the knock from the front of the engine These engines are a close tolerance, meaning if the timing chain breaks, you could take out the valve train. Check for excessive freeplay in the timing chain , and if present, get it changed. As far as the overheating problem, how hot is it getting? The factory cts is set to turn on the fans around 220-230, so that is normal. Are your fans kicking on?
