The dealer didn't give me the original key and the car's alarm system has been tripped. The problem is he can't get it reset and the GM people wont tell him how to reset it. So now my car is sitting there basically just there. Does anyone know about the alarm system for the 01 grand am or do I need a new mechanic? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all. babybird

Yep, GM has horrid problems with the passlock2 systems on these cars. Unfortunately they won't fess up to it. THe only fix is to replace the sysem which is usually around $350. If you just want to drive it, turn the ignition on without starting it for 10minutes. Then you can start it. Unfortunately, it will fail again until you have it fixed. Oh, the system is in the cyl. lock and is not dependant on your keys so you can make copies of the keys and it should still work.
