i know what you mean its hard on cars, i broke a rim in half from a crack in my drivway, i cried too :'(
I slide any where from 10-35 feet. Depends on speed, and entry angle.

The other day (I wish I had my cam), I was drifting down a street, downhill. I was probably going about 20mph. Then boom, I hit a tiny lip and the car goes flying in the air tumbling...and back onto the wheels, and kept going.
