I definately agree that you should find one that has been well maintained, and has documentation.
The biggest thing to remember is to take your time, and be patient. There are many 911s out there, it's important to find the right one, not the first one.
I would definately lean towards a later car if money isn't the most important factor. The CIS can be a tricky thing to deal with, especially when it starts needing maintenance, whereas the EFI is rather straightforward. The G50 is a plus as well, if you can find one. Personally, I wouldn't go for the Targa myself, as it adds about 50 kilos to the car.
