charcoal canister is part of evaporative emissions system. it stores fuel vapors until your ecm tells the purge solenoid to release the fuel vapors to the engine to be burned. it keeps the fuel tank pressure low. gas in the tank creates pressure and it is released in to the engine at a specific time to relieve the pressure in the tank. if the valve is stuck open well your engine will be running rich and it will also act like it has a vacuum leak creating stalling, hesitation, and dying out. the easiest way to find the canister is to follow the fuel lines from the gas tank until it leads you to the canister.
