The EDMONTON JOURNAL- Fire investigators believe a series of vehicle fires this weekend were the work of arsonists.

About 2 a.m. Monday, firefighters found two cars ablaze, one on the street at 34th Street and 138th Avenue and another in a nearby parkade.

A 1991 Toyota and a 2004 Acura were destroyed.

"I assume they were targeted," fire department Capt. Daryl Brennan said. "It's not real unusual. It's becoming a thing of the day."

Brennan said evidence of molotov cocktails was found at the scene.

The night before, a 2002 Acura was set on fire at 130th Avenue and 120th Street.

Residents of Sunrise Apartments at 16421 Stony Plain Rd. were awakened just after 7 a.m. Sunday when a stolen Pontiac was set on fire in the parkade, causing smoke damage to the building.

Two nearby vehicles were also damaged from the flames and smoke. Investigators pegged the damage at $18,000.

No one was hurt, though some suites had some smoke damage.
