On some cars, there's a "fusible link" which looks like a piece of wire, but it's actually a fuse designed to prevent fires, etc. It usually connects right off the starter relay mounted on the fender. The link will be wrapped in heat shrink tube and will be connected directly to the same terminal the large positive battery lead connects to. DO NOT simply "bypass" this!! It is there to save your butt from getting caught in a fiery mess if the electrical system goes haywire. Consult your Chilton's/Haynes for the proper amperage and replace it correctly.
