The A/C problem and the battery problem are different. Have the battery / charging system tested and codes read at auto zone (free).
Then get the A/C checked out at a good shop probably needs recharge.
Don't put off the A/C because you don't use it , it also runs in defrost/defog to provide dry air to the window, also the "beefy sound" was probably tha a/c running. The new R134 systems are all alot louder than the old R11 systems. Good Luck.
