One night, after work, I got to the bar at about 1:15am... Last call would be at 1:30, and they close at 2. I knew that I would want more than one beer, but wouldn't finish the first one by last call, and service was slow, so I ordered 2 pints.
I sat at the bar by myself, looking through a local rag, one of the beers was in front of me as I drank it, and I set the other off to the side (in front of the empty seat next to me). I kept checking my watch to see how long I had left to drink, and looking around, checking the front door to see if anyone I knew was wandering in, and after a while, these 2 girls approached me and were very friendly and wanted to know my name and whatnot. They were both very very attractive, thus, I was a bit startled that they had come up and started chatting with me out of the blue.
So, I sat and talked to them for about 20 minutes, and it was obvious that one of the girls was trying to get me together with the other girl... Weird situation. Finally, after a while, one said "so, it looks like you got stood up, are you okay?".
It turned out that since I had the empty beer next to me (and I kept checking my watch and looking towards the front door), they thought that I was waiting for a girl who no-showed on me, and they felt a bit sorry for me and decided to come over and cheer me up. They certainly cheered me up, and we all had a laugh about the mix-up, but they both gave me their numbers anyways. I never called them (since I've got a girlfriend), but it was a great ending to a rough day.
Got me thinking though... go to the bar, order two drinks, set one in front of an empty seat, and then sit and drink the other periodically checking your watch and the front door... Maybe some beautiful woman will take pitty on you and introduce herself LOL.
